"New Venture Championship" by Dr. Charles
Matthews
Congratulations to MBA student
team members Aaron Simmons, Ron Birkhahn, Denise Fugate, Blake Guyler (not
pictured), and Benjamin Pettit on making it to the final round of five in
the 2000 New Venture Championships at the University of Oregon in
April. Twenty schools from around the world presented some of the
best business plans possible for new ventures, so making the final five
was quite a feat. The team did an absolutely outstanding job
representing CBA and the College of Engineering with their new venture
plan, "Britech Devices, Inc." This is the first time UC
has sent a team to Oregon's international competition. This same
team placed third out of 12 at Indiana University's Spirit of Enterprise
Case Competition in February.
Britech Devices, Inc. has pioneered a new and innovative
emissive technology that seeks to displace current cathode ray tube (CRT)
and liquid crystal display (LCD) illumination technologies. Flat
panel display manufacturers as well as consumers are seeking color display
technology that uses less power and is smaller, brighter, and more durable
than currently available. It is envisioned that by 2008, Britech's
RE-Vision monochrome and color devices will meet that need and emerge as
the new standard in the $35 billion dollar flat panel display
industry. Britech is currently seeking venture capital to refine and
prototype its technology.
The Britech team won their track outright, and joined
the winners of the other four tracks in the final presentation.
Despite strong show, the CBA team finished just out of the money against
Oregon Graduate Institute of Science & Technology (1st Place), San
Diego State (2nd Place), University of Louisville (3rd Place), and Penn
State (5th Place). Oregon and Louisville were both "dot
coms" and SDSU was a seller of physical and occupational therapy
equipment.

"SCORE Foundation honors UC MBA Students"
by Dr. Charles Matthews
Teams of
students from CBA served as advisors to retailers, wholesalers, and
manufactures this past year as part of the Small Business Institute Field
Case Study program. Advisors to a fastener manufacturer, a metal
working company, and a firm specializing in constructing and installing
customized thatched roofs are the top three finishers in the 1999-2000
Cecil Boatright Business Plan Competition sponsored by the Service Corps
of Retail Executives (SCORE) Foundation.
The 2000 Cecil Boatright Business
Plan/Case Competition and annual awards luncheon was held at the UC
Faculty Club on May 9, 2000. Dean Fritz Russ was very grateful for the
SCORE Foundation's long-standing support of entrepreneurship education in
the CBA at UC. "It is a triple win situation. The
students benefit from the opportunity to apply their knowledge and
expertise and learn from the businesses, the businesses benefit from
student interaction and input, and the community benefits from the
excellent support of SCORE."
The award luncheon, sponsored by the
Cincinnati Chapter of the SCORE Foundation and the Small Business
Institute (SBI), recognized the best student field case project conducted
in CBA. This was the 15th SCORE Foundation awards luncheon for the
CBA student teams and the 13th named for the late Cecil Boatright.
Boatright served as the manager of the Cincinnati Branch Office of the
U.S. Small Business Administration for many years.
This year's first place team included
part-time MBA students Ken Bohrer, Tom Bonifield, Tony Khaskelis, and Alan
Sherry. They were recognized for their work with Fascinating, Inc.,
a producer of captive fasteners for the computer, electronics, and
telecommunications industries. The field case was completed as part
of the course requirements in 890 Strategic Management as the students'
capstone case experience under the direction of faculty member Dr. Chamu
Sundaramurthy (Mgmt). Published Autumn 2000 Vol. 17,

Competition and Banquet Update
UC MBA New Venture Team Takes First Place in Lightning Round of New
Venture Competition
Portland, OR: The University of Cincinnati MBA New Venture Team,
Physiomics Inc., team took first place and a check for $1,250 in the
Lightning Round at the 2003 New Venture Championship sponsored by the University of Oregon. Physiomics Inc. team
members include part-time MBA students Dan Shelly, Ph.D., Jessica Miller,
and Thad Edmonds. The team's faculty advisor is Charles H. Matthews, Ph.D.
Physiomics Inc. was the recent winner of the 5th Annual University of
Cincinnati CBA MBA New Venture Competition held in January.
The 2003 New Venture Championship was a full weekend with three events
happening in quick order: a Mini-Trade show, where all 21 teams displayed
their ventures during an opening reception and a one-minute
"Elevator" Pitch competition; a Semi-Final Round with four tracks
of five teams each to select the final five; and the Lightening Round for the teams that did
not reach the final five.
Before entering the Lightning Round, Physiomics Inc. semi-final track
included:
Physiomics Inc. - University of Cincinnati (a full-service strategic
outsourcing provider of intelligent and comprehensive physiological analysis
for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies)
Double Eagle Company - Oregon Graduate Institute School of Science &
Engineering (a golf course management system)
Urban Spa - U of San Francisco (a new twist on the health club market for
busy urban professionals)
SportsTek - UT Austin (applying existing technology to golf grips to
reduce vibration)
Mid IR Sensor - Purdue University, School of Mechanical Engineering
(developing a new minimally invasive medical device for continuous insulin
monitoring)
The UC team also did an excellent job with the mini-trade show, pulling
together an excellent display and handout materials. Dan Shelly gave a very
smooth one minute elevator pitch, but in a real time random draw it was the
last presenter (University of Manitoba - Image Technologies, an MRI system
for animals) first runner up and one of the last presenters (UT Austin
SportsTek) winning the elevator round. Unfortunately, the UC team did not
make it into the final five, with SportsTek winning the Semi-Final Round
sending Physiomics Inc. on to the Lightning Round. The final five were and
the order they finished in the Final Round were:
Cupel Technologies (5) - Georgia Institute of Technology (designs,
develops, markets innovative inspection systems for the mfg. and assembly of
printed circuit boards)
Xoran Technologies (2) - U of Michigan (small market applications for
portable CAT scanners)
Grade-A-Timber (4) - Thammasat University Bangkok, Thailand (applying
microwave technology to internally inspect lumber for natural flaws)
Term Seek Inc. (1) - U of Utah (language translation software that
assists and doubles the speed of human translators)
SportsTek (3)- UT Austin (applying existing technology to golf grips to
reduce vibration)
In the Lightening Round Saturday Morning, Physiomics had a new set of
judges and 45 minutes (10 minute bare bones presentation, no PowerPoint,
props, or aids of any kind; 15 minute q&a/feedback; 5 minute action step
pitch; 5 minute feedback). The competition didn't get any lighter - their
Lightning Round track included:
Fluent Solutions - U of Wisconsin, Madison (develops and markets
innovative agricultural products) This team won the U of Nebraska
competition two weeks ago.
Image Technologies - U of Manitoba (an MRI system for animals)
Pensa - UCLA (software developer of writing programs that accelerates the
writing process for business and consumers)
The UC team did an outstanding 10 minute pitch and an even better job of
impressing the judges with their ability to think on their feet during the 5
minute action step presentation.
Congratulations to Dan, Jessica, and Thad!
